Vielleicht war Roy Orbison dann doch der große Lebensretter des Rock'n'Roll und der wahrhaftigste Interpret von Teenagerträumen. Als Posterboy wie Elvis taugte der mondgesichtige und extrem kurzsichtige Texaner jedenfalls nicht. Dafür verkörperte The Big O wie kein zweiter Sänger seiner Generation die ganze Sehnsucht und Zerrissenheit einer amerikanischen Jugend. Die großen Orbison-Dramen bewegen sich gewissermaßen alle im Konjunktiv, handeln vom leidvollen Auseinanderklaffen zwischen Verlangen und Wirklichkeit. "The Soul Of Rock And Roll" umschreibt das neueste 4-CD-Box-Set diesen Zusammenhang etwas windschief.
